No fewer than 11 persons were shot dead with 18 others seriously injured on Sunday by assassins during a church service at St Phillip Catholic Church Amakwa in Ozubulu Ekwusigo Local Government Area in Anambra State. According to Police Sources, some gunmen invaded the church when the mass was on going at about 6.30am shooting indiscriminately and sporadically at worshipers.
The Police in a press release signed by the State Commissioner Police, Garba Baba Umar stated that the CP received a distress call relating the invasion of the church by unknown assailants. Immediately, Police teams along with other sister security agencies moved to the scene of crime where 18 persons were found injured and taken to the hospital whilst the 11 dead persons were evacuated to the morgue.
Whilst debunking the conspiracy theory that the shooting had a trace of terrorist mold of Boko Haram or Fulani herdsmen, CP Umar maintained that intelligence and preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting incidents in the church was as a result of a feud between two individuals who are from the community but lived outside Nigeria and that one of the warring party allegedly built the church for the community.
The State Commissioner of Police said that his command would brief the public after investigation is conclude while also commiserating with all those who injured and lost their lives. He plead that his command will not rest on its oars until the perpetrators of the dastardly act are apprehended and brought to justice.
