The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi says no fewer than 74 Corp Marshal officers have been killed by motorist in the last 18months across the country.
Oyeyemi who was the special Guest honour at the Haulage and logistics Magazine Annual Conference held in Lagos on Thursday hinted that his Commission was advocating for an upward review of penalties payable by those driveling and making telephone calls to serve as a deterrent
He sated that what is obtainable wherein phone users on the wheels are charged paltry sum as penalty would not deter motorist from using their phones, positing that when a defaulter driver pays huge penalty of about 50,000 to 100,000 naira for using his or her phone on the wheel, “then we will be getting somewhere.”
Maintaining that “We will not stop at ensuring the prosecution of those erring drivers. It is my responsibility to ensure the safety of my personnel on the highway. So, if you knock down my personnel and you are running away, I will go after you.’’
