The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni on Tuesday visited the warring communities of Ilagbo and Oriyanrin in Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State where a Police Inspector and two siblings were killed during fracas that ensued during a masquerade festival.
The CP who was briefed on the spot about what led to the Community fight told journalist who were on tour with him that youths of Oriyanrin, a neighboring community who attended the masquerade fiesta tagged, Kilajolu festival at Ilagbo had a brawl with youths of Oriyanrin, the hosting Community which led to the death of one of the youth from Oriyanrin town.
Consequently, it was alleged that the Oriyanrin youths organised a reprisal attack, laid ambush for the Ilagbo youths who were returning from the festival arena and hacked one of the youth identified has Ismaila to death. Eyewitness account had it that Ismaila’s brother,Matanle who was at the scene to recover the body of his Ismaila was killed in the process.
The reprisal attack by Oriyanrin youths according to bystander account was resisted by Ilagbo youths, and so mayhem was let loose as both sides resorted to burning down houses, vehicles and destroying other valuables in sight.
Following the fracas, a team of policemen were deployed to communities to restore normalcy however in the process an Inspector was hacked to death by the rampaging youths.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni while on the spot assessment to ascertain the extent of damage addressed elders and Traditional rulers of both communities, as hewarned against prolonging the communal clashes. The threatened the Police would be compelled to take stiff actions against the Communities should they failed to embrace peace.
CP Owoseni said the Police would ensure no reprisal attack is carried out in both communities, he charged the traditional heads of both Communities to show good leadership and eschew bitterness. CP Fatai, further added that nothing stops the Communities from organizing vigilance group to compliment the effort of the Lagos State Police Command, bemoaning that it is regrettable for youths to kill Policemen who were sent to restore peace.
Fatai Owoseni then tasked the Community leaders to secure their environment, insisting that security ‘start with them. He urged the residents to join hands with Police to fight militancy in their Communities instead of creating divisions and unrest.
