Fake Policeman Arrested In Kano For Extorting N100,000 Bail Money From Suspect

The Police in Kano State Command have arrested a man who allegedly have the habits of impersonating the Police and Court officials in order to extort money or defraud unsuspecting innocent Nigerians.

The illicit activity of the suspect was brought to an end with his arrest after a compliant was lodged at the Public Compliant Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) on the 27th July through a phone call from a female victim in Kano city. The victim is said to have picked up a phone number from the PCRRU flyer that was written in English, Hausa and Kanuri dropped off in the city of Kano through Police helicopter with which she called the Police.

According ACP Abayomi Shogunle, the victim had complained that a team of Police Patrol raided a place called Kwana Hudu area of Kano and arrested her son for al alleged robbery case. The victim told the Police that her son was taken to the Special Anti Robbery Squad office in Kano from where he was subsequently charged to court for an alleged robbery incident.

ACP Shogunle stated that victim son was eventually remanded in the prison custody on the orders of the Judge pending the next court date. However, an investigating officer (IPO) known as Yakassai who she met at the court premises collected the sum of one Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000) from her under the pretense of facilitating the release her son but failed to keep to his promise and her son was taken to Kurmawa Prison from the court premises.

ACP Shogunle added that the case filled by the victim was immediately registered with a tracking number PCRRU426434 issued and the matter was then referred to the State Commissioner of Police Kano Command for investigation and who was mandated to report back Force Headquarters in line with the Inspector General of Police directives. Investigation carried out by the Kano Command revealed that the arrest of the victim’s son and subsequent prosecution was as a result of feigned case of robbery reported to the Police.

The said Yakasai was arrested and investigation bared that he was not a Police officer or a court official but an imposter who have been going around courts in Kano metropolis pretending to be a Police officer and a court work extorting money from unsuspecting Kano citizens.The suspect is said to have confessed to extorting the sum of 100,000 from the woman (victim) and has since been charged to court.

Meanwhile, ACP Shogunle has admonished members of the public to imbibe the “Change Begins with Me Campaign” by ensuring that they do not pay for bail, as it is free. And if they are extorted by the Police, they should call the PCRRU on 08057000001, 08057000002 and SMS and WhatsApp only to 08057000003.
