A suspected kidnappers den at Obadeyi-Ijaiye end of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway has been uncovered by residents of the area and three suspects who disguised as mentally challenged persons believed to be kidnappers have been arrested by the Police who raced to the scene to rescue the suspects from arson.
Two of the suspects who confessed to being members of a kidnap gang were found with three phones, an Automated Teller Machine card and two loaves of bread, with some clothes and other items.
According to eyewitness account , the den, a tunnel leading to an uncompleted building was uncovered in the early hours of Tuesday when a highway sweeper with the Lagos State Waste Management Agency had a distress call for help emanating from the tunnel. The LWMA stragglers quickly alerted residents of the neighborhood to a voice of a distressed woman in the tunnel
Mammoth crowds were said to have gathered at the two ends of the drains during which five persons came out of the channel, two of them were set ablaze by the irate mob, while three others were rescued and taken away by the Police.
During the early raid by the Police, clothes, flip-flop and bags believed to be effects of abductees, were found in the building. The State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseniwho visited the scene said it was too early to label the building a kidnappers’ hideout stating that scientific investigations would be carried out on the items.
Fatai Owoseni said a thorough scientific profiling of the place would take place, adding that the Force sniffer dogs would be sent to the place, why appealing to the people not to take laws into their hands by resorting to jungle justice rather should allow the Police carry out their role.
Meanwhile, residents of the area have appealed to police authority to go after the real suspects, noting that some of them are believed to still be hiding inside the tunnel.
