The Police in Abia State have arrested three suspects for allegedly robbing, kidnapping and killing a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps identified as Nnadozie Ohanyerem in Umuahia.
The deceased was a Corps member in Rivers State, who came on a visit Abia to see his friend at the Escoba Estate, Umuobia, Olokoro suburb of Umuahia.
According to Police investigation Ohanyerem was ambushed by the suspects on September 9, 2018, while driving into his friend’s residence in the estate.
It was gathered that the suspects robbed the deceased of his cell phone as well as that of his friend who came to open the gate for him.
Police says that the suspects allegedly abducted the deceased in his Toyota Avalon car with number plate KYA 383 E after which the suspects later shot the deceased, threw away his body along the Olokoro Road while his car was driven to Owerri, Imo State by the gang members.
Police added that the deceased’s car was handed over to one Martins Anthony, a car dealer and the alleged kingpin of the gang by a naval officer identified as Victor Oparacha who is an accomplice.
However, luck ran out on the suspects when they called the father of the deceased and told him to pay some money into his account for him to return the stolen car. Police source said the suspect were placed under surveillance as money was paid into the bank account of one of the suspect and he was arrested while trying to withdraw money from his account.
The source added that the arrest of the first suspect led to the nabbing of the two other members of the gang and that the Police were still searching for other members of the gang currently at large.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the arrest of the suspects, adding that they would be arraigned on a charge of murder.
He said Police are on the trail of other suspects still at large. He gave the name of the suspects as; Uchenna Kalu, Augustine Ihekoronye and Eze Anthony.
