The Edo State Police Command yesterday paraded three suspects in connection with the murder of a lecturer at the University of Benin, Edo State.
The victim, Prof. Otasowie who was a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was shot dead on October 4 in the Ekehuan area of the State by hoodlums. The victim mobile phone has been recovered from the suspects.
The State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo said the suspects would soon be charged to court on completion of investigations. He gave their names as Osase Oghogho, Best Ogumode and Happy Okoro.
Meanwhile during interrogation, the suspects claimed that they never intended to kill the professor, insisting that the deceased was mistakenly shot when he rushed towards one of them who had a gun, as they tried to stanch his car.
One of the suspects, Oghogho said they went out for a street robbery when they sighted a car driving out of a compound and decided to collect it. “I asked the man to give me the car key, but he threw the key away. I shot into the air. As I was loading another bullet, the man held me and during the struggle, the gun fired and he was hit”, the suspect said.
