UNIBEN Professor Shot Dead by Unknown Gunmen


Some unidentified gunmen have reportedly killed a senior member of the University of Benin (Uniben), Edo State, Prof. Paul Otasowie.

According to reports, Otasowie was shot dead by the armed men in front of his residence on Ekehuan Road in Oredo Local Government Area of the State on Wednesday.

Confirming the incident, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, said that management is trying to gather the right information as there are different versions of the incident at the moment.

“We are trying to gather the right information now because we are getting different versions. The first information was that of  assassination, the second version was armed robbery theory and that he was inside a car when the assailant shot him ”, Osasuyi stated.

While describing the death of the Professor as a huge loss to the University community, he added that the deceased was a hard-working and dedicated lecturer. Osasuyi said the University cannot ascertain what transpired, but did explain that delegates had been sent to the deceased’s house to meet with the family.

He noted that the institution was concerned about the level of insecurity in the State and wish something is done immediately. The spokesperson said just recently another lecturer was kidnapped.

“The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Orunmwense is saddened about this development. We just wish that the insecurity in Edo State is looked into. Just recently Osayomore was kidnapped. We commiserate with the family and the school is mourning”, he added.
