The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Adeniyi Adeyemi, accused of impersonating the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, in Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order on Wednesday after Adeyemi pleaded not guilty to an eight-count charge filed against him over alleged conspiracy and forgery.
The charges were also brought against two other suspects who are currently at large.
Following Adeyemi’s plea, the prosecution, led by counsel from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, asked the court to fast-track the proceedings to ensure the case was determined without unnecessary delay.
The prosecution further requested that Adeyemi remain in custody pending the determination of the case.
However, his lawyer, Genesis Francis, asked the court to consider his client’s bail application, informing the judge that Adeyemi was scheduled for a medical appointment on Friday.
Francis said the medical condition was contagious, although he did not disclose the ailment.
In response, the lead prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, told the court that adequate medical personnel were available to attend to Adeyemi and that the correctional facility also had medical facilities.
Justice Umar declined to hear the bail application immediately, citing the number of cases before the court.
The judge subsequently ordered Adeyemi’s remand and adjourned proceedings until October 12, when the court is expected to hear his bail application and the substantive case.
Adeyemi became the subject of investigation following controversy surrounding the PFIPC, an organisation whose legal status as a government agency came under scrutiny.
Authorities had questioned his claim to have served as the council’s Director-General, while investigations also focused on the circumstances surrounding his purported appointment.
The controversy deepened after Adeyemi allegedly claimed that he paid N400 million through an intermediary as part of a N600 million arrangement to secure the position.
The matter also resulted in a N15 billion suit instituted by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, against Adeyemi over alleged bribery.
A legislative investigation into the matter subsequently raised concerns over the verification of government documents. The House of Representatives also identified what it described as a broader network involving alleged fake government agencies, bank accounts and government insiders.
President Bola Tinubu had on July 7, 2026, directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to investigate the PFIPC.
The ICPC later submitted its interim report to the President in August and recommended Adeyemi’s prosecution.
The commission subsequently stated that the appointment letter allegedly used by Adeyemi was fraudulent and did not originate from the Presidency.
Adeyemi was later arrested by the Police Intelligence Response Team in Osun State before being charged before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
