The Delta State Police Command has arrested nine persons during a statewide operation aimed at dismantling illegal roadblocks and ending unauthorised revenue collection on major highways across the state.
The exercise, which commenced on Friday, was carried out in line with the Federal Government’s directive to rid Nigerian roads of extortion, harassment and other criminal activities that hinder the free movement of motorists and commuters.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Bright Edafe.
According to the statement, police operatives targeted several identified hotspots where illegal toll collection had become rampant. The operation led to the arrest of nine suspects at the Head Bridge area along the Delta-Anambra boundary and on the Benin-Asaba Expressway near Agbor.
Edafe said the suspects are currently in police custody and will be prosecuted after investigations are completed.
He reaffirmed the command’s determination to sanitise highways across the state, stressing that similar operations would be extended to other parts of Delta to eliminate illegal roadblocks and ensure safer travel for road users.
The command also appealed to residents and motorists to cooperate with security personnel as the enforcement exercise continues across the state.
