The Edo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video capturing a confrontation between officers of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) and operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

The incident, which has attracted widespread reactions online, reportedly escalated during the confrontation, with one of the IRT operatives seen firing his rifle into the air.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement on the incident.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, has engaged representatives of both sides and directed a comprehensive investigation to determine what led to the confrontation.

The CP also ordered a disciplinary review of the conduct of the officer captured firing the weapon during the incident.

The command said it would not tolerate indiscipline, unprofessional behaviour or any misuse of police authority by its personnel.

It added that any officer found to have violated established rules would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

The police further stressed the need for security and government agencies to maintain professionalism, mutual respect and effective cooperation in the discharge of their duties.

While describing the incident as concerning, the command said the development would not undermine the existing working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism and respect for the rule of law, while urging members of the public to report complaints involving police misconduct through the appropriate channels rather than resorting to self-help.
