The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man in connection with the deaths of two children, aged six and five, in separate incidents in Alkaleri and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas of the state.
The command disclosed this in a press release issued on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, stating that both cases had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
In the first case, police arrested Fatima Ibrahim, 23, following the death of six-year-old Mubarak Ibrahim in Kwaimawa village, Alkaleri LGA.
The incident occurred on October 16, 2026, when the boy took a drink given to him by his stepmother, according to the police statement.
He subsequently began vomiting and was rushed to the Primary Health Centre in Kwaimawa before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, for further treatment.
Despite receiving medical attention for eight days, Mubarak died on October 24. A doctor subsequently confirmed his death.
Police investigations commenced after the village head of Kwaimawa reported the incident, leading to the arrest of the suspect, who remains in custody as inquiries continue.
In a separate incident, operatives arrested 19-year-old Sadiku Musa in connection with the death of five-year-old Habiba Abubakar in Zaila village, Ganjuwa LGA.
According to the police, Habiba’s grandfather, who resides in Badaromo village, reported her missing at about 7pm on October 23.
A search was launched, but the exercise ended in tragedy when the girl’s body was discovered in a small water pit behind the village at about 7am on October 24.
Police operatives attached to the Soro Division responded to the report, secured the scene and arrested Musa in connection with the case.
The command confirmed that both cases had been transferred to the SCID in Bauchi for discreet and thorough investigation.
Reacting to the incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, described the deaths as heartbreaking and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased children.
The commissioner assured the families that the command would pursue justice, while urging parents, guardians and community leaders to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
