The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed expired donated medicines valued at N59 million at the Igwuruta dump site in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The agency disclosed this on Thursday in a post on its official X account, stating that the medicines were imported from the United States through the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Area 1 Port in Port Harcourt.
The affected products included antidepressants, anti-ulcer medications, analgesics and drugs used in the management of hypertension.
NAFDAC explained that while donated medicines remain an important source of healthcare support, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations, expired or unsuitable products must be removed from circulation and safely destroyed.
The agency said the exercise was necessary to prevent the medicines from being diverted, misused or distributed to members of the public without regulatory authorisation.
The destruction was conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service and other relevant government agencies.
NAFDAC said the operation underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding the integrity of the country’s pharmaceutical supply chain and ensuring that only safe and suitable medicines reach the public.
