Nigeria has been selected to host the 48th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with the continental football governing body’s highest decision-making meeting scheduled to take place in Abuja on November 21.
The announcement was made by CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, during a press briefing in Johannesburg, where he described Nigeria as a proud football nation and reaffirmed the country’s importance to the growth of the sport in Africa.
According to Motsepe, the decision to hold the General Assembly in Abuja reflects CAF’s commitment to promoting football development across all 54 member associations.
“We’re going to meet in Abuja in Nigeria for the Ordinary General Assembly in November,” the CAF chief said while outlining the organisation’s plans to advance football across the continent.
“Nigeria is a proud football nation, and there’s a reason why I took it to Nigeria, and there’s a reason why I’m looking at some of the countries in Africa because we have to do something very special in every one of the 54 countries on the continent, as much as we have to do something special in South Africa, in Kenya, in Cameroon, and all over the continent,” the South African billionaire told the gathering on Wednesday.
The CAF Ordinary General Assembly is the organisation’s highest policy-making forum, bringing together presidents of football associations and delegates from all 54 member countries to deliberate on key issues affecting African football.
The annual meeting provides an opportunity for member associations to discuss governance, competitions, financial matters and other strategic decisions that shape the future of the game across the continent.
CAF also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for agreeing to host the event.
“CAF is grateful to the government of Nigeria and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their cooperation and partnership,” the football body said on its official website.
“The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly is expected to be a huge success and will contribute substantially to the development and growth of Football on the African Continent.”
Often referred to as the “Parliament of African Football,” the General Assembly is held annually and serves as the body’s supreme decision-making platform.
During the meeting, member associations consider reports, approve budgets and audited accounts, review competitions and vote on key policy matters, with each country entitled to one vote.
The 47th Ordinary General Assembly was held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, under the chairmanship of CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
