The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, has reportedly been killed in a shooting incident in Zamfara State.

Marafa was said to have come under attack on Sunday while travelling back from Gusau, although details surrounding the incident remain unclear.

The university confirmed his death in a statement signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi.
The institution said information available to it indicated that the Bursar was shot while returning from Gusau.

However, NOUN did not provide further information on the circumstances of the attack or disclose the identities of the suspected assailants.

Marafa was described by the university as a committed administrator who served in various capacities throughout his career before his appointment as Bursar in September 2026.

The institution expressed deep sorrow over his death, describing it as a significant loss to the university community.

NOUN conveyed its condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and associates, while praying for strength and comfort for those affected by his death.

The university said arrangements for his burial would be made public once details are received from his family.

It also prayed for the repose of his soul and asked Allah to grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
