The Nigeria Police Force has released former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on bail following questioning over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
Okorocha, a former senator who represented Imo West Senatorial District, was reportedly arrested on Monday night at the REIZ Continental Hotel in Abuja. He was released after approximately one hour of interrogation.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, reportedly confirmed the former governor’s arrest and release, stating that he had been asked to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning.
However, details of the interrogation could not be independently verified as the police spokesperson did not respond to calls seeking clarification.
The police have yet to provide specific details of the alleged offences, noting only that investigations into the matter are continuing.
Okorocha’s arrest was reportedly linked to his failure to honour earlier police invitations to appear for questioning as part of the investigation.
The former governor was initially scheduled to report to the Force Headquarters on September 2. The appointment was subsequently moved to September 8 following a request from his legal representatives.
He allegedly failed to appear on the rescheduled date, prompting further action by the police.
Reports also indicated that the police obtained a bench warrant to compel his appearance in connection with the investigation.
Despite his arrest and subsequent release, the circumstances surrounding the allegations of forgery, impersonation and criminal conspiracy remain unclear, as the police have not publicly outlined the details of the alleged offences.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no information indicating that Okorocha had been formally charged in court over the matter.
