The incident occurred around 5pm on Thursday after the officer and his colleagues attempted to stop the victim, who was driving a private vehicle.
According to eyewitnesses, Anthony continued driving after he was flagged down, prompting the officers to pursue him.
During the chase, the policeman fired three shots, with one of the bullets striking Anthony in the back and passing through his chest.
The impact caused him to lose control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and hit three people, who sustained serious injuries.
The incident sparked panic in the area as residents and passers-by rushed to the scene and pulled Anthony from the vehicle. He was unconscious
and covered in blood.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the injured motorist was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The witness further said the officer fired several shots into the air while attempting to flee the scene.
Some youths reportedly confronted the policeman, seized his weapon and restrained him before other officers arrived and took him away.
Videos circulating online also showed residents and business owners gathered at the scene following the incident.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Agaba, confirmed awareness of the incident.
She said the command was still obtaining information from the Divisional Police Officer and promised that an official statement would be released after the facts had been established.
