Seven people have died and two others sustained injuries following a multiple-vehicle crash on the Ibafo section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday.
The crash occurred at about 12:03 a.m. along the Ibafo-Lagos corridor near Kara, Ibafo, and involved three vehicles: a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter.
The state Route Commander, Chief Superintendent Afolabi Odunsin, said nine male passengers were involved in the accident, with seven losing their lives and two others sustaining injuries.
He said the FRSC Ibafo Outpost received the distress call at about 4:04 a.m. and reached the scene five minutes later.
According to the corps, preliminary findings indicated that speed violation was the likely cause of the crash, although investigations are still ongoing.
The bodies of the deceased were evacuated by the Ogun State Ambulance Service, while the injured victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The three vehicles involved were subsequently handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibafo for further investigation and necessary action.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed sympathy to the families of those who died and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.
He urged motorists, especially drivers of articulated vehicles, to avoid excessive speeding, maintain adequate distance from other vehicles and remain alert while driving.
Ogunjobi also advised motorists to exercise greater caution during night journeys due to poor visibility and fatigue, which he said could heighten the risk of road crashes.
