A police corporal identified as Blessing Omene has been killed after she was struck by a moving truck while on duty in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

Omene was reportedly attached to the Safer Highway Patrol and was performing her official duties along the Glory Land Drive axis of the East-West Road when the incident occurred on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Confirming the incident in a post on the Bayelsa Police-Media platform, the state Commissioner of Police, Ajao Saka Adewale, said the officer died after being hit by the truck while carrying out her duties.

The police authorities said the truck driver had been arrested and detained as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continued.

Mourning the officer, Adewale expressed condolences to her family, colleagues and members of the Safer Highway Patrol Unit, describing her death as a painful loss to the command.

He said, “I received with deep sorrow the news of the sudden death of F/No. 520061 CPL Blessing Omene of the Safer Highway Patrol, on 30th September, 2026, who was reportedly struck by a truck while on duty along Glory Land Drive, East-West Road.

“On behalf of the Bayelsa State Police Command, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues and the entire Safer Highway Patrol Unit. We mourn an officer who only reported for duty in service to the public and did not return home.

“As we remember Blessing, let it be in our minds that this is one sad event that pains the command to the marrow and disturbs the mind of the IGP and his management team. As the saying goes, the fall of a leaf is a warning to others, I strongly appeal to us all to take every possible care to protect ourselves in the course of protecting others.”

The commissioner urged police personnel, particularly officers deployed along highways, to exercise caution around moving vehicles, maintain safe positions and adhere strictly to established road safety measures while conducting operations.

He also directed supervisors to reinforce the safety precautions during operational briefings.

Adewale commended the officers who responded to the incident and ensured the arrest of the truck driver.

“I want to sincerely appreciate the efforts of the teammates who ensured the arrest of the suspect. The command stands with the bereaved family at this difficult time, and we pray God Almighty comforts the bereaved family and grants repose to the soul of the departed,” he added.
