The Hotel and Personal Service Senior Staff Association, affiliated with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), has commenced a protest at the Abuja Continental Hotel over alleged unfair labour practices and poor working conditions.

The union is also challenging issues relating to the unionisation of hotel workers and what it described as restrictions on employees’ freedom of association.

The protesting workers told journalists that repeated attempts to engage the hotel’s management over the issues had yielded no positive response.

The situation escalated on Monday as union members moved to shut the hotel’s entrance, a move resisted by police personnel and some hotel officials.

Although the union was unable to secure the gate, its members have blocked access to the hotel, disrupting movement around the premises.

Further details are expected as the situation develops.
