At least four officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps have been captured on video allegedly assaulting a man during an encounter along Makurdi Road in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The incident reportedly happened around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, with footage showing the officers, dressed in FRSC uniforms, repeatedly punching and kicking the man identified as Hassan Babalawal.

In the video, Babalawal is seen on the ground as the officers continue the assault, while he attempts to defend himself.

A person recording the incident can be heard questioning the officers and calling their attention to the treatment of the man.

Babalawal’s elder brother said the FRSC patrol team stopped his younger brother along the road before allegedly subjecting him to physical assault.

He maintained that Babalawal had not committed any criminal offence to warrant the treatment.

“My younger brother, Hassan, was stopped by FRSC officers at Makurdi Road, Lafia, Nasarawa State. During the encounter, the officers beat and physically assaulted him despite the fact that, to the best of our knowledge, he had committed no criminal offence,” he said.

According to the family, the incident left Babalawal suffering physical and emotional distress.

The family has called on the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and the Nasarawa State Sector Commander to identify the officers seen in the footage and investigate the incident.

The family also said it was ready to provide photographs, videos, medical records, eyewitness accounts and other evidence that could assist the investigation.

The elder brother stressed that the family was not opposed to the lawful responsibilities of the FRSC, but insisted that citizens should not be subjected to unjustified physical assault or harassment.

The incident has renewed concerns over allegations of excessive use of force by uniformed personnel in Nigeria.

Rights groups have previously raised concerns about alleged abuses involving law enforcement agencies, while videos showing confrontations between motorists and road safety officials have continued to circulate on social media.

The FRSC is responsible for road safety enforcement and traffic management, but has faced public criticism over allegations of high-handedness during roadside operations.

The latest incident is expected to generate further calls for accountability and a proper investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
