The Lagos State Government has announced a ₦2 million cash prize for the winner of its 2026 Gele Festival, scheduled to hold on Sunday, November 8, as part of efforts to promote Yoruba cultural heritage and create economic opportunities for young creatives.
The competition will feature Gele artists showcasing their skills and creativity in designing and tying traditional headwraps, with the most outstanding participant expected to emerge as the winner.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, said the festival was designed to preserve the cultural significance of Gele while empowering young people with skills to generate income.
Aregbe described Gele as an important aspect of Yoruba identity, noting that the traditional headgear plays a significant role in celebrations and carries cultural meanings through its various styles.
He said the festival would also recognise experienced stylists whose creativity and innovations have contributed to the development of the craft.
According to him, the state government has trained hundreds of young Gele artists in advanced tying techniques, contemporary styling and creative business management to improve their professional skills.
Aregbe explained that the initiative aligns with the Sanwo-Olu administration's commitment to making tourism, arts and culture drivers of economic growth rather than limiting them to entertainment.
He added that empowering women and young creatives would create opportunities for financial independence, strengthen households and support community development.
The special adviser further disclosed that successful trainees would be included in an official Lagos Creative Database to connect them with event planners, government functions and international tourism exhibitions.
He said the arrangement would provide participating stylists with opportunities to secure jobs and grow their businesses beyond the festival.
Aregbe also noted that men were actively involved in promoting the craft, describing the initiative as consistent with the state's THEMES+ agenda, which promotes inclusion, fairness and equal economic opportunities.
