The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident in Ajegunle that claimed the life of a young girl and left another injured.

The incident occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle, during a police operation to restore order after a violent clash between two rival groups.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the development in a statement, saying officers were deployed to the area after receiving a distress call over a confrontation involving the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys.

The groups were reportedly engaged in a dispute over toll collection and were armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

During the intervention, ASP Olajide allegedly fired his weapon, hitting two young girls. The victims were immediately taken to Ajeromi General Hospital for treatment.

One of them, identified as Omole Taiwo, was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she died. The second victim is receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

The police expressed sadness over the death of the girl and extended their condolences to her family.

The Command disclosed that the officer had been disarmed and detained, while the investigation had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

It assured that appropriate legal and disciplinary measures would be taken based on the findings.

The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, also visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assure them of a thorough investigation.

Fatai reiterated that no officer found culpable would be protected, stressing that the Command remained committed to accountability, professionalism and the protection of lives.

The police urged anyone with useful information about the incident to report to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s Public Relations Department.
