The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and varying degrees of rainfall across several parts of Nigeria on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, warning residents in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant against possible localised flooding.
In its Daily Weather Outlook released on Tuesday, the agency said parts of the northern region would experience partly cloudy skies in the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected in Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna and Kano states.
NiMet also forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall during the afternoon and evening in parts of Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Yobe, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa and Taraba.
For the North-Central region, the agency predicted cloudy conditions in the morning, with thunderstorms and light rainfall expected over parts of Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory.
It added that most parts of the region could experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall later in the day.
In the southern states, NiMet forecast cloudy skies in the morning, with chances of light rainfall over parts of Ondo State and across the South-South and South-East regions.
The agency said moderate to heavy rainfall could occur in parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom during the afternoon and evening, while other parts of the South may experience light to moderate rainfall.
NiMet warned that thunderstorms may be accompanied by strong winds, lightning and reduced visibility, urging residents to take necessary safety precautions.
The agency advised motorists to exercise caution while driving during rainfall and avoid flooded roads or areas with fast-moving water.
It also urged airline operators to obtain updated weather information and advisories from NiMet to ensure effective planning and safe flight operations.
