The Oyo State Police Command has rescued a one-month-old baby girl allegedly sold for ₦2m and arrested two suspects, including the child’s mother and a medical practitioner who owns the health facility where she was born.

The incident occurred in Ido Local Government Area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The suspects were identified as 23-year-old Cecilia Amos, the baby’s mother, and 40-year-old Dr Adeleke Ebenezer, owner of Ebepraise Health Centre in Ido.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday.

According to the police, the case was reported on October 15, 2026, by Mary Amos, a resident of the Ogunwade area of Ido, who said her daughter delivered a baby girl at the health centre on September 6.

Mary reportedly told the police that her daughter left home with the infant about a week after delivery and subsequently failed to provide a satisfactory explanation about the child’s whereabouts, prompting suspicions that the baby might have been sold.

Following the report, police operatives arrested Cecilia for questioning. During interrogation, she allegedly disclosed that Ebenezer and another suspect, identified as Hassan Oludunni, persuaded her to participate in the arrangement and facilitated the sale of the child to one Odunayo Folawewo.

The police said preliminary investigations indicated that the baby was sold for ₦2m, with the mother allegedly receiving ₦1m, while Ebenezer and Oludunni reportedly collected ₦500,000 each.

The infant was subsequently rescued by the police, while Ebenezer was arrested in connection with the alleged transaction.

The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend Folawewo and ensure that everyone implicated in the case was brought to justice.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons, urging residents to report suspected cases of child trafficking and other related offences.

The police advised members of the public to contact the Oyo State Call Response Centre on the toll-free number 615 or the command’s control room on 08081768614 and 07055495413 to report emergencies or suspicious activities.

The statement was signed by Ayanlade on October 16, 2026.
