The Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate for the August 15, 2026, Osun State election, Adedamola Adebayo, popularly known as FRYO, has stepped down from the race and thrown his support behind the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke.
Adebayo announced his withdrawal on Wednesday during a press conference in Osogbo, where he also instructed PDP members, supporters and political structures aligned with him across the state to back Adeleke in Saturday’s election.
His decision came just three days before the election and could alter the political dynamics surrounding the closely watched contest.
Adebayo said he arrived at the decision after holding consultations with political stakeholders and carefully reviewing the situation in the state.
According to him, the move was motivated by what he considered the broader interest of Osun rather than his personal political aspirations.
He said politics involved more than seeking elective positions, adding that leaders must sometimes make difficult choices when circumstances demand them.
Adebayo subsequently declared his support for Adeleke’s bid to retain the governorship, saying his decision followed extensive consultations and careful consideration.
He stressed that the decision was personal and that he accepted full responsibility for it, noting that PDP leaders, members and stakeholders had been informed.
The former candidate urged his supporters and PDP structures loyal to him to support Adeleke during Saturday’s poll.
While acknowledging that some supporters might disagree with his position, Adebayo said he respected their right to hold different views and would not fault anyone for exercising that right.
He maintained that leadership sometimes required making unpopular decisions and standing firmly by them.
Adebayo also appealed to political parties, candidates, supporters and residents to ensure the election was conducted peacefully, warning against violence, intimidation, hate speech and political hostility.
He said Osun State was greater than any individual, political party or election, stressing that residents would remain together after the election.
The former PDP candidate expressed appreciation to those who had supported his political ambition, saying his latest decision did not diminish the relationships, friendships and experiences developed throughout his political journey.
He urged his supporters to accept the decision and work peacefully towards Adeleke’s emergence, calling for maturity, unity and responsibility in the interest of the state.
