The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing officers attached to a stop-and-search team on the Lagos-Benin Expressway allegedly behaving unprofessionally and making derogatory ethnic remarks towards a member of the public.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, from the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, the officers involved, comprising one Assistant Superintendent of Police and three Inspectors, have been identified and taken into custody pending an orderly room trial.
The statement added that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident to determine the level of involvement of each officer and ensure appropriate disciplinary measures are taken.
The Police noted that the conduct captured in the video does not reflect the values and standards of the Force, stressing that ethnic profiling, discriminatory behaviour and disrespect towards members of the public will not be tolerated.
The Force further assured Nigerians of its commitment to professionalism, accountability and ethical policing, maintaining that any officer found guilty of misconduct would be sanctioned in line with established disciplinary procedures.
