The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will on Monday unveil its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections and present its statement of account at its third National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.

The party will also present certificates of return to its candidates for the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

The meeting is scheduled to commence at 10am at JD Event Centre, Kashim Ibrahim Way, opposite A-Class Park, Maitama, Abuja.

The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, announced the development in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to the statement, the presentation of the party’s statement of account by its National Treasurer will be a major highlight of the meeting, underscoring its commitment to financial transparency and accountability.

Director challenged other political parties, particularly the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to adopt similar measures in managing their finances.

He said the party’s financial resources would have been stronger but for the economic difficulties facing Nigerians, which he attributed to the policies of the APC-led administration.

The publicity secretary claimed that approximately 80 per cent of the party’s candidates could not afford the expression of interest forms due to widespread poverty, hunger and deprivation, forcing the party to provide the forms free of charge to the affected aspirants.

“Our finances would have been more robust. However, contrary to speculations in the public domain, and due to the level of poverty, hunger and deprivation in the country occasioned by the rudderless APC and its amorphous economic policies, about 80 per cent of our candidates could not afford the Expression of Interest forms,” he said.

“The party had to issue forms to such candidates free of charge,” he added.

The statement noted that the National Campaign Council would comprise representatives across all levels of the party’s electoral contests, including the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state legislative elections.

It added that the unveiling would strengthen the party’s campaign structures and advance its preparations for the 2027 polls.

“The NDC is turbo-charged and ready to give Nigerians the altruistic leadership the nation deserves. A New Nigeria is Possible. We can do it!” the statement read.

The planned unveiling comes after the party postponed the inauguration of its campaign council, initially scheduled for October 20, to October 26.

The party had attributed the postponement to the busy schedule of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and an important engagement abroad.

The inauguration was subsequently rescheduled to coincide with the NEC meeting, where the party is expected to make key decisions concerning its preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, had dismissed suggestions that the NDC was inactive or factionalised, reaffirming the leadership’s commitment to the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket.

Cleopas also said the party’s National Working Committee had held several meetings since August and submitted proposals on the composition of the campaign council for consideration by the party leadership.
