The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators of the murder of Unwana Okon in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.

Okon, a resident of Ndot, was lured to Mbiaikot under the pretext of purchasing Afang leaves but was later found dead.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Uyo on Sunday.

According to the police, the matter was reported at about 3:30pm on November 1, 2026, by the victim’s brother, Eno, who told officers that his sister had received a telephone call from an unidentified person inviting her to Mbiaikot to sell Afang leaves.

The statement said Okon responded to the invitation but was subsequently murdered, while her mobile phone and an undisclosed amount of money were taken.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the killing and directed the immediate transfer of the case to the command’s Violence Crime Response Unit for specialised investigation.

The unit is expected to identify and apprehend those responsible for the crime and ensure their prosecution.

It also urged residents of Oruk Anam and neighbouring communities to report suspicious activities and provide any credible information that could assist the investigation.
