The death of Tanzania’s First Gentleman was announced by Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Ameir died at about 8am local time.
According to the Vice-President, the late Ameir had been battling a heart-related condition before his death.
Ndejembi said preparations for his burial were already underway in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar.
Ameir, an agricultural academic, maintained a largely private life and was rarely seen accompanying President Samia at official functions.
He became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when his wife assumed the presidency in March 2021.
The couple had been married since 1978, before Samia began her political career, and had four children—three sons and a daughter.
Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in politics and serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
RUTO MOURNS TANZANIAN FIRST GENTLEMAN
Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences to President Samia and her family following the death.
In a message shared on X on Monday, Ruto described Hafidh as a lifelong companion to the Tanzanian president and a beloved father to their children.
He said Tanzania had lost a distinguished son while Kenya stood in solidarity with its neighbours during the period of mourning.
Ruto also prayed for strength and comfort for President Samia and her family, while asking God to grant the deceased eternal rest.
AFRICAN UNION EXTENDS CONDOLENCES
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also conveyed his condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.
In a statement published by the AU on Monday, Youssouf expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and wished them strength and comfort as they mourned the loss.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Hafidh Ameir Hassan’s soul, concluding with the Islamic condolence: “Inalilahi wainailehi rajiun.”
