Armed bandits have reportedly attacked Farin Ruwa community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, abducting five residents and setting harvested rice crops ablaze amid worsening insecurity in the area.
The attack has heightened concerns over the safety of farmers, many of whom are reportedly being forced to pay huge sums of money before gaining access to their farmlands to harvest their produce.
According to conflict reporter Bakatsine, the attackers abducted residents, killed some people and destroyed harvested rice by setting it on fire.
One of the reported victims, Saminu Adamu, was allegedly killed despite his family having paid a ransom for his release. His harvested farm produce was also reportedly destroyed in the attack.
Five other residents identified as Abdulrahman Shehu, Mansur Muhammad, Idi Muhammad, Abdullahi Sani and Sani Usman were said to remain in the custody of the attackers as of the time the incident was reported.
The incident has further highlighted the growing impact of insecurity on agricultural activities and food production in Zamfara State, where repeated attacks have disrupted farming and threatened the livelihoods of rural communities.
Fear of abduction and violence has reportedly forced several farmers to stay away from their farmlands, leaving crops unharvested and exposing households that depend on agriculture to the risk of food shortages and financial losses.
Residents have appealed to the Zamfara State and Federal Governments to urgently intervene, secure the release of the abducted victims and strengthen security measures to protect lives, farmlands and agricultural produce.
The reported attack underscores the persistent security challenges confronting farming communities across parts of northwestern Nigeria, where kidnappings, killings and ransom demands continue to disrupt agricultural activities and undermine rural livelihoods.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Zamfara State Police Command were reportedly unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, had yet to respond to calls and a message seeking comment as of the time of filing this report.
