Five adult men have died following a fatal road crash involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday near Sawmill, around Mowo Bus Stop, when the Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, collided head-on with the Iveco truck, registered as T28081 LA.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said it received an emergency distress call about the crash at 5:16 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of its Dolphin Response Team from the Igando Base.
According to the agency, preliminary findings indicated that excessive speed and reckless driving by the Camry driver led to the crash.
The driver was said to have lost control of the vehicle before crossing into the opposite lane and crashing directly into the approaching truck.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the collision claimed the lives of all five occupants of the Toyota Camry.
He said emergency responders recovered the victims’ remains and handed them over to the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for further necessary action.
Several agencies participated in the rescue and recovery operation, including LASEMA’s Dolphin Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, FRSC and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Morogbo Division.
To restore traffic flow, two recovery trucks were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles from the expressway.
LASEMA said the recovery operation was completed successfully, with the vehicles subsequently taken to the Morogbo Police Division.
The affected section of the expressway was later cleared and reopened to motorists.
Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution while driving.
He particularly warned against speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices, stressing that such behaviours pose an even greater risk during the early hours of the day.
The agency reiterated that road safety requires collective responsibility and urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations to reduce avoidable deaths on Lagos roads.
