The affected states are Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta, with polls expected to hold in the constituencies where the vacancies occurred.
INEC announced the date in a statement shared on its official X account on Friday, listing the affected constituencies as Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.
According to the electoral commission, voting will be conducted at designated polling units within the affected constituencies.
The exercise is scheduled to commence at 8:30am and close at 2:30pm on election day.
The vacancies arose from different circumstances across the four states.
In Gombe, the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency seat became vacant following the death of its representative, Yaya Bauchi Tongo, in June 2026.
In Bauchi State, the Sakwa State Constituency seat became vacant following the death of the former lawmaker, while the member representing Disina resigned from the House of Assembly to pursue a chairmanship bid.
The Udu State Constituency seat in Delta State was declared vacant after its former representative, Collins Egbetamah, defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Meanwhile, the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency seat in Kano became vacant after its former occupant, Rabiu Shuaibu, resigned his state assembly position to contest the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat.
Shuaibu subsequently won the federal constituency by-election held in June, defeating candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement and the Labour Party.
The September 19 election will therefore provide an opportunity for voters in the affected constituencies to elect new representatives and fill the five legislative vacancies.
