The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has honoured operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Special Intervention Squad (SIS) and the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) for successfully rescuing seven teachers and 39 pupils abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after spending 56 days in captivity.
The recognition ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, also paid tribute to Sergeant John Jerome Abena of the FID-IRT, who was killed during the high-risk rescue operation.
Describing the late officer as a courageous patriot, the Inspector-General extended his condolences to the bereaved family, saying Sergeant Abena’s bravery, selflessness and ultimate sacrifice reflected the highest ideals of service to the nation. He assured the family of the Force’s continued support and welfare, stressing that the fallen officer’s sacrifice would never be forgotten.
IGP Disu also commended members of the rescue team for their professionalism, resilience and courage throughout the operation. He noted that the successful mission, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, underscored the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force’s intelligence-led policing strategy in combating violent crime and protecting lives.
The police chief disclosed that the rescued teachers and pupils were not present at the ceremony because they are receiving medical attention and psychological support to help them recover from the trauma of their ordeal.
Reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of police personnel, the Inspector-General said recognising and motivating officers, especially those involved in dangerous operations, remains one of the priorities of his administration.
“A policeman is first of all a human being,” he said.
He urged officers and men of the Force to remain vigilant, committed and steadfast in the fight against crime, while reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to protect lives and property across the country and improve the welfare of its personnel.
