The summit, which will be held at the Bharat Mandapam, is expected to focus on global governance, economic cooperation, sustainability and other pressing international issues.
Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in New Delhi on Friday to represent President Bola Tinubu at the high-level meeting.
The gathering brings together the 11 BRICS member countries — Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates — alongside partner nations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was among the leaders who arrived in the Indian capital early Friday, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected later in the day.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive on Saturday, marking his first visit to India in nearly seven years.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo have also arrived for the summit, while several other heads of government and senior officials are expected to participate.
The United Arab Emirates will be represented by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while Brazil will send its Foreign Affairs Minister, Mauro Vieira.
Other prominent participants expected at the summit include United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, New Development Bank President Dilma Rousseff, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.
The summit will also draw leaders and senior representatives from several partner and outreach countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Uruguay, Cuba, Belarus, Bahrain and Kazakhstan.
World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus are also expected to attend.
Held under the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability,” the summit is expected to address ways of promoting inclusive global growth and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
The opening session will focus on “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism,” with leaders expected to deliberate on reforms and cooperation within the international system.
The programme will also feature a tour of the Bharat Innovates Exhibition, a joint tree-planting ceremony and a gala dinner hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with participating leaders.
The second day will feature a broader engagement with BRICS partner countries and invited leaders, focusing on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability as pathways towards inclusive global economic growth.
