Amos Dangut has officially assumed office as the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), becoming the 14th substantive head of the examination body.

Dangut, a Nigerian, commenced his five-year tenure on October 1, 2026, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

His assumption of office was announced in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs at the WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana, Demianus Ojijeogu.

Dangut is expected to remain in office until September 2031. His appointment was ratified by the Council, WAEC’s International Governing Board, during its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra in March 2026.

Before his elevation, Dangut served as the Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria from October 2, 2023, until his appointment as Registrar.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning, obtained between 1991 and 2020.

He began his career in education in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he served as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council as a staff member in 1998.

Since joining WAEC, Dangut has held several positions across its test development, examination security, branch, zonal and post-examination departments.

His previous positions include Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer in the Test Development Division in Lagos; Senior Assistant Registrar and Head of Examinations Security in Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller in Yola; Deputy Registrar/Controller of the Post Examinations Department; Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja; and Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office.

WAEC described Dangut as an experienced administrator and test developer with expertise in test development, examination administration and branch and zonal office management.

The Council said he had used information and communications technology to improve test development, post-examination activities and examination administration for more than two decades.

“Throughout his career, Dangut has demonstrated integrity, transparency, diligence, and a strong commitment to service,” the statement said.

As Head of the National Office, he served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.

He also represented WAEC at major education policy platforms, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

During his tenure as Head of the National Office, Dangut oversaw several initiatives aimed at improving examination delivery, security and efficiency, including the introduction of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialised question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also supervised the development and implementation of services such as the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and digital systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.

The Council further described him as a scholar with publications in national and international journals and said he had presented papers at several academic and professional conferences.

Dangut currently serves as the Regional Representative of the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
