The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Inspector Osumah Frank following the circulation of a video in which he allegedly made derogatory and ethnically charged comments about former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The Command, in a statement issued on Friday, September 25, 2026, by its spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the officer in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
Frank was identified as the police officer seen in the viral video making statements suggesting that an Igbo person could not become President of Nigeria.
In the footage, which showed the officer in police uniform while apparently travelling in a commercial vehicle, he was heard making disparaging remarks about Obi and accusing him of criminal activities, ritual practices and internet fraud.
The officer also alleged that Obi would turn the seat of government in Abuja into a “Yahoo office” if elected president.
Other passengers, some of whom could be heard speaking Igbo, reportedly reacted to the officer’s comments in the background of the video.
The footage generated widespread reactions on social media, with members of the public questioning the propriety of a serving police officer making political and ethnic-related comments while dressed in uniform.
Confirming the development, the Lagos Police Command said Frank’s comments were made in his personal capacity and did not reflect the official position of the Force.
“The Command has commenced appropriate disciplinary action against the officer in line with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force,” Adebisi stated.
“It also wishes to make it clear that the statements made by the officer were made in his personal capacity and do not represent the position, views or official disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.”
The Police Public Relations Officer added that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, had reiterated the need for officers to uphold professionalism, discipline, civility and respect in their dealings with members of the public.
According to Adebisi, the commissioner also stressed that police personnel wearing the Force uniform have a responsibility to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Command will not condone any conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the Police,” she added.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and what it described as “policing with humility and integrity.”
The incident comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the conduct and public statements of government officials and security personnel receiving increased attention.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, is now the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress for the 2027 election.
