Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, after a prolonged battle with stage-four cancer.
His daughter, Kira Hassan, confirmed the development during an emotional Instagram Live session on Sunday, where she struggled to come to terms with her father’s passing.
The news was also announced by Emiralty Africa, a popular television platform, which described Ogogo as a star filmmaker and expressed sadness over his death.
His passing came just hours after Kira had spoken openly about her father’s deteriorating health and the difficulties the family faced while trying to secure his treatment.
In a TikTok Live session on Saturday, she alleged that some individuals were attempting to take advantage of the family’s situation by demanding large sums of money while claiming they could help with the actor’s medical care.
She mentioned several amounts allegedly requested by different individuals, including N800,000, N5 million and sums ranging from $11,000 to $18,000.
Kira said the family was not wealthy enough to meet such demands and was primarily concerned with ensuring that Ogogo received proper medical attention.
She also admitted that the situation had taken a serious emotional toll on her, saying she needed to check her blood pressure because she was not coping well.
The actor’s illness reportedly affected his entire family, including his brother, whom Kira affectionately referred to as her “big daddy.”
She revealed that relatives regularly communicated through a family group chat to share updates about Ogogo’s condition. According to her, one message from a cousin showed how deeply worried her uncle had become about the actor’s health.
Kira said the relationship between the two brothers was exceptionally close, noting that the family had witnessed the depth of their bond throughout Ogogo’s illness.
She expressed concern about her uncle’s emotional state, saying she believed he was struggling to cope with the possibility of losing his brother.
The actor’s condition had also taken a toll on Kira herself. She disclosed that she withdrew from social media because constantly seeing pictures and updates about her father’s cancer battle had become emotionally overwhelming.
Speaking about the possibility of his death before his passing, she said she could hardly imagine what life would look like without her father.
Kira described Ogogo as a deeply caring father who wanted the best for everyone around him, adding that their close relationship made the situation particularly painful for her.
Taiwo Hassan, widely celebrated for his contributions to Yoruba-language cinema, was one of the prominent figures whose career helped shape the Nigerian film industry.
His death marks a significant loss to Nollywood, with tributes expected from colleagues, fans and other members of the entertainment industry.
