Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual gathering of world leaders, following the President’s directive.
During the week-long engagements, the Vice President presented Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate, where he reiterated the country’s call for reform of the United Nations Security Council.
He advocated permanent representation for Africa on the council, alongside fairer access to global financing, stronger climate support and enhanced international cooperation.
Shettima also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, where Nigeria pushed for greater value addition to Africa’s mineral resources through local processing, manufacturing and industrial development.
At a high-level education financing event jointly hosted by Nigeria and Italy, the Vice President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to education as a key investment in human capital, productivity and national development.
He also expressed Nigeria’s support for the Global Partnership for Education’s $5bn financing campaign.
The Vice President further met with Nigerians in the Diaspora, highlighting their potential contributions through investment, expertise and professional networks.
Other engagements included meetings with the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission and UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed.
Through the engagements, Shettima presented Nigeria’s positions on development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace and security, while restating the administration’s push for a more representative and equitable global order.
